The Hungarian company Olmos és Tóth Kft. is the only company that combines traditional "mangaliculture" with the raising of piglets and sows in accordance with modern sanitary requirements.
Mangalica pig feed consists exclusively of wheat, barley, corn, minerals and green fodder. For all the pigs of Olmos és Tóth Kft., it is stipulated that they can only receive animal health treatment for preventive purposes. None of the breeds of Mangalica receive special veterinary interventions or medications. All pigs are free of Aujeszky, Leptospirosis, Brucellosis and PRRS syndrome.
Together with the Animal Research Institute (ÁTKI), Olmos és Tóth Kft. implemented the program called "Extravagante", unique for the Mangalica breed, to promote the growth of sows with a valuable genetic background. This program was part of a comprehensive project entitled "Biotechnological interventions to increase the reproductive performance of Mangalica pigs", developed at the Emődi plant in 2002-2008.
On April 15, 2016, the Hungarian State recognized this work by granting Juan Vicente Olmos, director of the company Monte Nevado, the Hungarian Cross of Merit.
The company works together with renowned Hungarian and foreign universities and institutes to examine the genetic and reproductive characteristics of the breed.
Up until 2010, more than 95% of the population of Hungarian Mangalica was in Emöd-Istvánmajor in the facilities of Olmos és Tóth Kft. Today, there are already more than 160 Mangalica breeding sites in Hungary. Olmos és Tóth Kft. invests heavily in research and development activities related to the Mangalica breed.
The company works together with renowned Hungarian and foreign universities and institutes to examine the genetic and reproductive characteristics of the breed. Spanish, German and Japanese research teams carry out analyses and investigations of tissues and blood samples jointly with their Hungarian colleagues.
